CHAPTER 14

RUNNING RIOT WITH RIVALDO

The good times didn’t stop there for Luís and Barcelona. In fact, that was only the start. No, they didn’t have Ronaldo anymore, but the club signed two new Brazilian forwards to replace him. Sonny Anderson had scored lots of goals in the French league with Monaco, while Rivaldo had taken the Spanish league by storm with Deportivo de La Coruña.

With Rivaldo on the left and Sonny through the middle, Barcelona’s new star strikeforce was nearly complete. All they needed now was a world-class winger to play on the right. Oh wait, they already had one of those – Luís!

‘Come on, we’ve got trophies to win!’ he cheered excitedly.

When Pep got injured, Luís became the new Barcelona captain. He took his role very seriously. It was a huge honour to wear the famous yellow-and-red stripes around his arm. The fans expected a lot from their leader but that was okay because Luís expected a lot from himself, and from his teammates. If they worked together, they could beat Real Madrid and win the La Liga title.

By the time Barcelona travelled to Real Madrid’s Bernabéu stadium for the first El Clásico of the 1997–98 season, they were already seven points ahead of their rivals. But they could not be complacent.

‘We can’t relax for a second,’ Luís said sternly in the dressing room before kick-off. He was even more fired up than normal. ‘If we do, Real will destroy us!’

It was Luís vs Roberto Carlos yet again. Who would win the big battle this time? In the fifth minute of the match, Luís raced down the right wing, with Roberto Carlos trailing behind him. The Barcelona supporters jumped up out of their seats, ready to celebrate. They had seen Luís do this so many times before.

He looked up and saw Rivaldo making a great run between the centre-backs. The pass would have to be perfect to reach him but if anyone could get it right, it was Luís. Goal!

Rivaldo ran straight to Luís with his arms out ready for the hug. ‘What a cross!’ he screamed.

But early in the second half, Roberto Carlos crossed and Raúl scored. It was Real Madrid 1 Barcelona 1, and Roberto Carlos 1 Luís 1. Both sets of fans cried out for a winning goal.

With ten minutes to go, Luís raced down the left wing, with Roberto Carlos chasing him once more. The Barcelona supporters jumped up out of their seats again, ready to celebrate. Luís looked up and this time, he saw Giovanni sprinting into the box. Goal!

Giovanni ran straight to Luís with his arms out ready for the hug. ‘What a cross!’ he screamed.

Luís turned to face the Barcelona fans and pumped his fists. He was leading the team towards glory, one incredible cross at a time.

In the second El Clásico at the Nou Camp, Luís chested the ball down and dribbled at Roberto Carlos. Which way would he go, right or left? With a burst of pace, Luís cut inside on his left foot and curled a beautiful shot into the far corner of the net.
